Reading and Phonics Teaching at Tenterden Infant School
At Tenterden Infant School we teach reading using a phonic and key word approach. We value the vital support that parents provide through hearing their children read at home and through sharing and enjoying lovely stories together.
We use phonic reading books from Oxford University Press including Songbirds and Floppy’s Phonics. Additional resources are also available to us, including Dandelion Books.
We also use Oxford Reading Tree and Ginn 360 books for the progressive learning of key vocabulary. The books include fiction, poetry, non-fiction and traditional tales to ensure the children enjoy a wide variety of engaging reading experiences.
At Tenterden Infant School we use the Oxford University Press ‘Read Write Inc’ scheme to teach phonics throughout the school.
It is important that children learn the correct pronunciation of phonic sounds. This video will help you to support your child at home with their phonics and understand how we teach children to pronounce sounds. This will also show you how words can be stretched out for writing and blended together for reading.
Speed Sounds Order
This is the order in which the children learn the sounds. The sounds are very soft; for instance ‘m’ is pronounced ‘m-m-m’ not ‘muh’ as this helps with blending the sounds for reading. Please attend our reading workshop to find out more.
